Glossary
This glossary defines terms used throughout the PBADOF documentation.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Accuracy | The number of raycasts used to find the optimal focus point. Acts as a multiplier on the base ray count. |
| Aperture | The opening in the lens that controls how much light reaches the sensor. In PBADOF, aperture is part of the physically based lens model and affects depth-of-field strength. |
| Applied focus distance | The focus distance actually applied to the render pipeline after transition smoothing and distance clamping. May differ from CurrentFocusedDistance. |
| ADS | Aim-down-sight. A state where the camera zooms or transitions to a weapon's sight, triggering ADS override volumes. |
| Bokeh | The visual quality of out-of-focus areas in an image. In URP, Bokeh mode is the recommended depth-of-field mode for PBADOF. |
| CameraFallback | A volume role that provides fallback focus and lens settings when no spatial volume is active. |
| Current focused distance | The focus distance selected by the solver in the latest solve, before smoothing or clamping. |
| Depth of field (DoF) | The range of distance in a scene that appears acceptably sharp in the rendered image. PBADOF automates this through physical lens simulation. |
| DepthOfFieldPreset | A ScriptableObject that stores reusable focus, lens, and filtering settings. It can be applied to cameras, weapon optics, and override volumes. |
| Extension | A custom class that implements IAutoDepthOfFieldExtension to inject focus or lens modifications into the solver pipeline. |
| Focal length | The distance between the lens and the image sensor, measured in millimetres. Longer focal lengths produce narrower fields of view and stronger depth-of-field effects. |
| Focus proxy | A component, AutoDepthOfFieldFocusProxy, that fits a box collider around renderer-only objects so PBADOF raycasts can hit them. |
| Focus snapshot | A diagnostic object, FocusDebugSnapshot, containing detailed information about the latest focus solve, including accepted and rejected rays and confidence data. |
| Glass traversal | A feature that lets focus raycasts pass through glass surfaces tagged appropriately to find focus targets behind them. |
| HDRP | High Definition Render Pipeline. Unity's high-fidelity render pipeline. PBADOF's primary development target. |
| Override volume | A component, AutoDepthOfFieldOverrideVolume, that blends focus and lens settings based on spatial position, camera state, or aiming state. |
| Pitch fallback | A fallback mechanism that activates when the primary ray acquisition cannot find a valid focus target, typically because of the camera pitch angle. |
| Readiness | The current state of the PBADOF pipeline, reporting camera, pipeline, and output status. |
| Spatial volume | A volume with role Spatial that overrides settings when the camera or target is inside its bounds. |
| URP | Universal Render Pipeline. Unity's cross-platform render pipeline. PBADOF supports URP with Bokeh mode. |
| Weighted depth clustering | A focus-solving technique that groups raycast results by depth and weights them to select the optimal focus distance. |
